Bond funds have been out of favour in South Africa over the last few years because of relatively high cash rates, making the additional yields available in the bond space seem not worth taking the additional risks. In the current environment with the repo rate falling to reach all time lows, bonds are trading close to all time highs, indicating that the additional return available by investing in bonds is significant.
