A measure of the volatility of a security or fund relative to the market benchmark. A ‘beta’ of zero means the stock or fund will move independently of the market. Positive beta means the security's price will move in line with the market - both either up or down; negative beta means the price will move in the opposite direction - one will go up as the other goes down.
